Secondary School 

Objectives 

The purpose of this programme is to allow secondary school students to grasp and understand the concept and importance of sustainable development (SD).

Programme Contents

Schools are welcome to choose one or more of the following activities including: interactive drama, seminar and workshop.

 1 Interactive Drama
  Interactive drama will convey the SD concept and its implications on our environment, society and economy to students. This year, the theme of the drama is "zero-carbon energy", including the development of solar, wind, nuclear, hydrogen and waste-to-energy. It will be introduced to students in a relaxed and interesting way. Over the past two years, the interactive dramas received positive responses from students and teachers. The drama performance will last for about 50 minutes, and the suggested number of participating students should not be less than 120. (Drama will be conducted in Cantonese)

  2 Seminar
 

The sustainability issues such as environmental protection, climate change and natural resources are already covered in the subjects of Geography and of Citizenship and Social Development for secondary schools.

The seminar is expected to complement the school curriculum and deepen students' understanding of SD-related topics through interactive presentation of global or local examples and topical issues. The seminar will last for about 50 minutes, and the suggested number of participating students should not be less than 120.

For this school year, 10 topics are available for selection. Please refer to Appendix 1 for details.
 

 

 3 Workshops
 

The workshop is carried out in a case study approach combined with in-class discussion or field trip, with a view to encouraging cross-disciplinary active learning and establishing SD values among students. It is suitable for secondary school students, especially those studying relevant subjects (such as Geography) and members of SD-related societies (such as environmental protection society). There are three options of workshop for selection (select only one from Option A, B or C):

A.

Lecture Briefing

A briefing for students on the background of a SD-related case in the participating school. Students will also be invited to gather relevant information and conduct research.

Duration:Around 1 hour
Suggested number of participating students: Not more than 60

Case Study

The speaker will visit the participating school and discuss the topics with students from social, economic and environmental perspectives and assess their impacts. Through discussion, sharing, reporting and presentation, students will have an in-depth understanding on the subject issue.

Site Visit

Students will visit a site relevant to the implementation of an SD project. The speaker will brief the students on the background of the case at the site in order to help them understand the ways in which the concept of SD can be put into practice. Students will also be invited to gather relevant information and conduct research after the visit.

Duration: 1.5 – 3 hours (depending on the topic)

Field Trip

Students will gain an in-depth understanding of the concept of SD through field trip.

All secondary schools are welcome to participate. The application which sent out in June 2023 has closed on 1 August 2023. Schools are welcome to choose one or more of the following activities including: interactive drama, seminar and field trip.

  Interactive drama will convey the SD concept and its implications on our environment, society and economy to students. For the past two years, the drama "Ecological Adventures: Animals and Their Place of Origin" has promoted the concept of sustainable ecology, while the drama "Blind Detective's Action: No More Plastic" has promoted the concept of reducing single-use plastics. Both dramas received positive responses from students and teachers. The drama performance will last for about 30 minutes, and the suggested number of participating students should not be less than 120. (Drama will be conducted in Cantonese)

 3 Field Trips
  Students will learn how to put the concept of SD into practice through guided field trips. There are 14 free and 2 subsidised field trip locations for selection (schools are welcome to join one free and one subsidized field trip). Please refer to Appendix 2 for details.

Participating schools are required to arrange transportation by themselves as well as arranging teacher(s) to accompanying their students.
